For this kitchen and dining area extension in South London, a couple wanted to transform their dark and cramped kitchen into a large, open space tailored to enjoy cooking and hosting.

The renovation included an improved connection with the garden, greater access to natural light and a generous display for artefacts gathered throughout their travels.

Burgess architects began by ensuring that the original full height door opening between the existing reception room and new extension was retained - a feature often lost where the new sloping roof of a ‘side-return’ extension intersects the original house.

A playful “pop-up” was added to maintain ceiling height into the extension, and a large skylight over the dining area further emphasises this lofty, open space after stepping down into it.

The redwood frame which supports the new glazed roof extends down the wall to form the uprights for the bespoke bookcase, creating a rhythm within the house by linking the new bookcase with the shelves in the reception room.

The kitchen is now bright and airy with a huge corner window looking onto the garden. The muted colours and warm oak floor complement the feel of the new breakfast room extension perfectly.

The exterior façade of the new work is framed in reclaimed brick and uses terracotta tiles in the recesses to make reference to the reddish brick tones of the window lintels and chimney pots - design considerations aiming at complimenting the historic house while clearly allowing it to reading as a separate addition.

"Throughout the course of our building project we benefited from a very enjoyable relationship with Ed and his team. He was professional, efficient, always available and whilst he had a strong personal vision for our design he listened attentively to our responses and absorbed them into the final outcome....We are delighted with the outcome which suits our lifestyle perfectly."
